To pursue Liberty & Happiness. When minimum wage does not pay the bills, the rights of many are threatened. If we do not address the extreme inequality in our country, we will continue to see an increase in poverty and crime. If we do not stand up and stand together for those affected by inequality, we will continue to see our Democracy crumble. When I say we must stand up to “Rich White Men” I’m talking about the men who have hoarded their wealth; who have used their extreme wealth to mislead the public, skewer the facts, and keep the people in a state of indentured servitude. The majority of American women are essentially Wage Slaves. “Fair Pay for Women Requires Increasing the Minimum Wage and Tipped Minimum Wage.” Check out this information from Pew: “U.S. income inequality, on rise for decades, is now highest since 1928” The facts are in, and it’s clear that the few with extreme wealth are the rulers, no matter who we elect into D.C. They have undermined our system of government to a point where our middle class is all but erased, and there is little hope for any given individual to realize the American Dream: a home, work that is fulfilling, and to have their basic needs met. Too many American citizens are one paycheck away from bankruptcy. In Topeka, KS, I hear a lot of people talk and complain about how our public institutions are failing. What are they doing with our tax dollars? Our schools are falling apart, parents are not parenting, too many people are dependent on the system when they need to get a job, crack heads and meth junkies are ruining everything. The truth is, Moms & Dads are working, but not earning enough income to meet all their needs. Because average wages have remained stagnant a dollar doesn’t buy what it once did. If the cost of goods continues to rise, but incomes do not, more families will turn to social welfare services to bridge the gap between incomes and cost of living. If a person is not earning a fair wage from his/her wealthy employer, they will not be able to buy a home and pay property tax to support schools and infrastructure. If a parent is working two jobs to try to avoid needing social assistance, she doesn’t have the energy or time at the end of the day to help her child with schoolwork, or even to read a bedtime story (parenting). The Prosperity many remember through nostalgia was a direct result of higher taxes on higher incomes, a practice our Nation & State have abandoned. When a young adult graduating high school is shocked into the truth that getting “A Job” will not get you out on your own, independently pursuing that Happiness and Prosperity, they may turn to substance abuse in an effort to eliminate the overwhelming depression. When a young child is living in poverty conditions, they see their parents working hard but still don’t have enough, and so their sense of powerlessness may increase and affect their ability to learn. The Rich White Men I refer to are not simply earning 10x, or even 100x the current minimum wage of $7.25. They are keeping 700x or more of profits earned, at the detriment of their own workers. The WalMart empire is fueled by our own delusions that spending (being a Good Consumer) will boost the economy and allow that WalMart employee to keep his/her job. The truth is the Waltons could pay employees 3x the minimum wage and still keep their current wealth. Instead they launder the money through politics to create rules and regulations that will continue to keep working Americans poor. CAPITALISM DOES NOT WORK. When will we humans accept this? Will we continue to crash the global economy every 100 years?
